Gorillaz Return After Six Years With Politically Charged “Hallelujah Money”

Gorillaz are back. After months of teasing, the British virtual band unveiled their first song in six years, “Hallelujah Money.” The collaboration with U.K. singer-songwriter Benjamin Clementine explores the themes of corruption, humanity and power and serves as our first preview of the band’s long-awaited new album. Watch it’s accompanying music video below.

Released one day before Donald Trump’s inauguration, the track is a sharp critique of the president-elect’s rhetoric and policies. The video features Clementine crooning in a lobby resembling Trump’s Tower alongside the La Candelaria brotherhood, a Spanish group that dresses in white robes similar to those of the Ku Klux Klan.

In a tweet accompanying the song’s release, Gorillaz wrote, “Dark times - u need someone to look up to. Me. Here’s a lightning bolt of truth in a black night. Now piss on! New stuff won’t write itself.”

Gorillaz are expected to release their fifth studio album later this year.
