Have you ever noticed metalcore is a lot like action movies? Think about it for a second: Most metalcore tracks are centered around this heightened emotion of aggression and angst while also masked with layers of darker and moody themes – just like action movies.
Also, similar to a lot of your favorite Bruce Wilis or Arnold Schwarzenegger films, metalcore, of course, provides plenty of combative moments with bloodthirsty breakdowns and epic fight-scene-like moments in the mosh pit.
So where are we going with all this? Well, progressive metalcore outfit Under Aegis is teaming up with The Noise to premiere their ruthless new single “Separate” along with its accompanying cinematic visual (which might just be better than the most action blockbusters).
Centered around a trade gone wrong for whatever’s inside a mysterious bag, Under Aegis’ Oscar-worthy video quickly turns into a bloodbath with a Mission Impossible-style shootout complete with actual gunshot sound effects.
Talking about the vision behind their high-production music video, vocalist Carl Martin says, “The music video ties into the theme of the lyrics to an extent. Associating yourself with the wrong people leads to unfortunate circumstances. The bullet and near-death experience is a representation of reinventing yourself as an individual. On the other hand, Avery’s [Gaitens, bassist] character represents bad decisions that catch up with you.”
“The question is,” adds Martin, “‘what’s in the bag?’ You will have to watch our next video to find out.”
As for the song itself, which stylistically shows off multiple layers of the band and lyrically focuses on a rough patch in the singer’s past, Martin commented, “I went through the darkest time of my life while in the process of writing these new songs. Each and every part has an intense emotional connection while in the midst of a performance. ‘Separate’ represents the desperation I felt to avoid people affecting my sanity over the course of a long period of time."
