Finding good music to mellow the mind is more important than ever while we all watch the world burn at our feet. If you’re on the hunt for the perfect push play and zone out tunes similar to Turnover, Elder Brother, Balance And Composure and more, look no further than Middle Distance.
For their divine debut album Blueshift, the UK act take you on a ride where the only requirement is leaving your body behind and letting the music take charge.
Giving an example of just that, today The Noise is stoked to premiere the quartet’s brand new music video for their soothing single “Only Strangers.”
Detailing the calming track and its focus on relocation, frontman Patrick Lewin states, “‘Only Strangers’ was the first song written from Blueshift. This song is a reaction to moving to a new place, meeting new people and within this situation your whole perspective on everything is filled with mystery. The unknown can be both exciting and leave you apprehensive.”
Lewin adds, “The lyrics are a cross between figurative imagery in the verses and an abstract in choruses. The first verse begins with a simple invitation - ‘Take my hand, you only know my first name.’ For me, this was the most straightforward way of depicting my reality. Walking hand in hand with people I’ve only just met as we both explore the mystery of our new environment.”
“‘Perfect dystopia. Harrowing euphoria. Trying to make you happier. Forget we’re only strangers,’” he continues, “the chorus is an abstract description of where I was living and how I felt at the time put in a simple way.”
As for the band’s artsy new music video, Lewin points to the influence of a fellow visionary saying, “The animation behind the song is ‘Eyewash’ by Robert Breer (1959), an American abstract expressionist artist. We always wanted the visuals for this song to be as strange as possible. Breer’s use of abstract and figurative imagery echo the lyrical content of the song, so when I was shown this animation by a friend I knew that they would fit together.”
