Being stuck at home with nothing do has probably lead you to discover some brand new hobbies you never thought you liked before.
Be it baking, biking, body building, ballet, beatboxing, billiards or beekeeping, you never really know what you’re going to like until you try it.
A prime example of this is alt rock band Betcha getting just a little too carried away with their latest hobby… birding.
Looking to impress a girl in their new music video for “Closer To The Sun,” frontman Charlie Greene flies full-fledged into his new avian obsession leaving fans wondering if he actually wants to become a bird – cue that scene from The Notebook.
“When we found out [‘Closer To The Sun’] was gonna be the next single, I immediately started brainstorming ideas for the music video,” said Greene. “I was out walking around and noticed the birds flying above. It started putting ideas into my mind about flight and actually being ‘closer to the sun.’ Eventually I landed at the idea of turning into a bird. I hit up our director Joey Brodnax and pitched him the idea. We started fitting all the pieces together and created the rest of the guys’ characters that would help me become an actual bird.”
“The music video was super fun to shoot,” Greene added. “We honestly probably shot enough footage for an entire short film. The weirdest shots were definitely the takeoff/bird suit shots, I think a lot of people on the lake that day were very confused as to what the hell we were doing. We also went to ‘Kentucky Down Under’ zoo to shoot in a bird aviary. The goal was for all the birds to cover us as we performed but they wouldn’t get anywhere near our instruments.”
As for the actual song itself, as Greene explains, the upbeat tune was made pretty fast once the concept came along.
“The song actually came together pretty quickly,” he said. “We were writing with our good friend Nick Bailey - he came in with the line ‘Closer to the Sun’ and I immediately connected with it. The melody for the chorus came first and had this massive rock energy that shaped the rest of the song. I think we tracked like 4-5 guitar hooks for the song and narrowed it down to one for the record. It was actually the last song written for our next project, I think we wrote it only a few weeks prior to hitting the studio.”
