What is it about pain and discomfort that helps mold some of the world’s greatest art? Is it because sorrow and misery are impossible to fabricate?
As the old adage goes, “Without rain there are no rainbows.” But as that relates to music, why do artists need to feel so much agony in order to create?
Chasing this idea of discontent and how it relates to their art, Arizona’s Ella Kaye has constructed a brand new five-track EP entitled It Never Comes From Comfort.
Teaming up with The Noise to premiere their unnerving title track which sounds like a fascinating science experiment between Being As An Ocean and Deafheaven, as vocalist Justin Chard puts it, Ella Kaye’s new song is the epitome of discomfort.
“This song is very much the band making a statement about where we have been and where we are going,” says Chard. “Musically, it’s a progression from anything we’ve done in the past while solidifying the signature elements that make up an Ella Kaye song. Vocally, it’s us utilizing the potential of three capable vocalists and writing with that in mind. Lyrically, it’s a snapshot of a very trying year for each of the members in all aspects of life, love, and happiness while also using that misfortune to fuel the creativity that we put into our music.”
Chard went on to say, “Ben Weinman from The Dillinger Escape Plan has his guitar hanging in the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. Written on the guitar is the phrase, ‘No great art has ever come from comfort’ and it’s always resonated with me. As this music began to take shape, we were all so inspired by how relatable those words ended up being and we wanted to pay homage to it with it being the title track for our EP.”
As for Ella Kaye’s ominous new music video which sees the four band members trapped in a colorful carnival-like maze, Chard said, “My goal with the video was to make it visually striking and original. All of my favorite movies require multiple viewings to fully appreciate them and that might have subconsciously translated to the oddity of this video. The theme at play can best be summed up by saying that it’s about a cycle that seems impossible to break. Thinking you’re changing, then waking up being exactly the same. Those feelings creep their way into many of my lyrics, including the lyrics for this particular song, so it felt like a very fitting storyline.”
